Australian Rules

Australian Rules Football Betting at VivatBet

Aussie Rules. It’s mad. It’s fast. It’s nothing like rugby or soccer or anything else you’ve seen. Players in sleeveless shirts running, jumping, kicking an oval ball through big posts. No offside rule. No pads. Just pure chaos for four quarters. And honestly? It’s brilliant to bet on.

Most Irish people come to Aussie Rules through the Irish connection. There are plenty of Irish lads playing in the AFL – the professional league. Guys like Conor Nash (Hawthorn), Mark O’Connor (Geelong), and Zach Tuohy (Geelong) have made the jump from GAA. Watching a county footballer from home tear it up in Melbourne? That’s a proper point of pride.

The Main Bets You’ll See

Match Winner (Head to Head). Pick which team wins. Simple as that. No draws in regular season – they play extra time if needed. So you always get a result.

Line Betting (Handicap). Same as GAA or rugby. The favourite gets a handicap. Say Geelong are -15.5 against North Melbourne. Geelong need to win by 16 or more for your bet to win. Bet on North at +15.5, and they can lose by up to 15 and you still win. Good for when one team is a hot favourite.

Total Points (Over/Under). Aussie Rules is high scoring. Teams can put up 80, 90, 100 points each. You bet on whether the combined score goes over or under a set number. If the line is 165.5 and the final scores are 92 and 84 (176 total), the over wins.

First Goal Scorer. Pick the player who kicks the first goal of the match. Odds can be massive. Forwards are favourites, but midfielders sometimes push forward and snag one early. A 20/1 shot is not unusual.

Anytime Goal Scorer. Your player just needs to kick a goal at some point. Much easier than first scorer.

Player and Game Props

Most Disposals. Bet on which player will get the most touches of the ball. Usually a midfielder who runs all day.

Most Goals. Pick the leading goal scorer in the match. Usually a full forward or a key forward.

Winning Margin. Will a team win by 1-12 points, 13-24, 25-36, or 37+? This is a fun bet if you’re confident one side will dominate.

Highest Scoring Half. Bet on whether the first half or second half has more total points. Games often open up late when players get tired.

Outright Season Bets

AFL Premiership Winner. Pick the team that wins the Grand Final at the end of the season. The big one.

Top 8 Finish. The top eight teams make the finals (playoffs). Bet on whether a team will finish in the top eight or miss out.

Brownlow Medal. The MVP award for the best player in the league. Usually a midfielder. Bet on who takes it home.

Coleman Medal. The award for the player who kicks the most goals in the regular season. Usually a full forward.

What to Look For Before You Bet

The Ground. Different stadiums have different sizes. Some are wide and suit running teams. Some are narrow and suit defensive sides. Know where the game is being played.

Weather. Rain makes the ball slippery. Scoring goes down. Wind can ruin a kicking game. Wet weather usually favours the underdog.

Injuries. Losing a key forward or a star midfielder changes everything. Check the team sheets before putting money down.

Travel. Teams from Perth or Adelaide flying to Melbourne have a long trip. Teams flying from Melbourne to Perth have a tough away game. Home advantage is real in the AFL.

Irish Players. Follow the Irish lads. If Conor Nash is having a good run of form, Hawthorn often play better. It’s not a betting strategy on its own, but it adds to the fun.

The Big Events

AFL Grand Final. The last Saturday in September. 100,000 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. One game to decide the champion. The atmosphere is incredible, even on TV.

Anzac Day. Collingwood vs Essendon every April 25th. The biggest home-and-away game of the year. Always packed, always intense.

Dreamtime at the ‘G. Richmond vs Essendon celebrating Indigenous culture. A proper spectacle.

State of Origin. Not every year, but when it happens, it’s the best players from Victoria vs the best from everyone else. Proper pride on the line.

Tips for Beginners

Watch a full game first. Don’t just read stats. Watch how the game flows. See how forwards lead, how defenders spoil, how midfielders run all day. You’ll understand the betting markets much better.

Follow the Irish lads. It’s easier to get invested when you recognise a name from home. Tuohy, O’Connor, Nash – they’re worth watching even if you don’t bet on their teams.

Start with match winner bets. Keep it simple. Pick a winner. Once you’re comfortable, try line betting or over/under.

Don’t overthink the rules. Yes, there are weird rules. Yes, the scoring system takes getting used to. But you don’t need to know everything to pick a winner. Just watch the ball and see who moves it better.

Check the ladder. The ladder is the league table. Teams near the top are good. Teams near the bottom are bad. It’s not rocket science. Start there.

Common Questions About Aussie Rules Betting

Do you offer AFL betting at VivatBet?
Yes. Every round of the regular season, plus all finals and the Grand Final. We also cover pre-season games if you want to get in early.

How do I read the scoring?
Goals through the big middle posts are 6 points. Behinds through the small outer posts are 1 point. Final score looks like 15.12 (102) – that’s 15 goals and 12 behinds for 102 total points. Simple once you get used to it.

Is there a draw?
In regular season games, yes. A draw is rare but happens. Your bet is usually void and stake returned. In finals, they play extra time until someone wins.

Why should I bet on Aussie Rules?
Because the markets are less crowded than football or horse racing. Fewer casual punters means more value if you do your homework. And the games are genuinely exciting – fast, high scoring, and full of mad moments.

Give it a go. Pick a Friday morning (the games are on overnight here), stick a small bet on, and watch the highlights when you wake up. You’ll see why people love it.
