Baseball Betting at VivatBet

Baseball. It’s America’s pastime. Hot dogs, summer evenings, the crack of the bat. But for a lot of Irish punters, it’s a bit of a mystery. Lots of games. Lots of stats. Lots of standing around. But here’s the thing – baseball is actually a dream sport for betting. There are 162 games per team per season. That’s thousands of matches to study. And because it’s so stats-heavy, you can actually get an edge if you know what to look for.

The professional league is called MLB – Major League Baseball. Thirty teams. The season runs from late March to the end of September, then the playoffs go into October. The World Series is the big final. Best of seven games to decide the champion.

The Most Popular Baseball Bets

Moneyline (Match Winner). Pick which team wins the game. Simple. There are no draws in baseball – they play extra innings until someone wins. So your bet always gets a result.

Run Line (Handicap). This is baseball’s version of a point spread. The favourite is usually -1.5 runs. That means they need to win by 2 or more runs for your bet to win. The underdog is +1.5 – they can lose by 1 run and you still win. Run line betting offers better odds than the moneyline.

Total Runs (Over/Under). Bet on whether the total runs scored by both teams goes over or under a set number. Typical lines are between 7.5 and 10.5 runs. If the line is 8.5 and the final score is 5-4 (9 runs), the over wins.

First Five Innings. Baseball games are long – nine innings. Some punters prefer to bet on just the first five innings. It reduces the chance of a late bullpen meltdown ruining your bet.

Player and Game Props

Player to Hit a Home Run. Pick a batter to hit the ball out of the park. Odds are usually long – even the best hitters only homer once every 12-15 at-bats. A 5/1 shot is common.

Strikeout Total for a Pitcher. Bet on whether a starting pitcher goes over or under a set number of strikeouts. Ace pitchers like Gerrit Cole or Jacob deGrom might have a line of 7.5 strikeouts.

Team to Score First. Which team puts the first run on the board?

Winning Margin. Bet on the exact margin of victory – by 1 run, 2 runs, 3 runs, or 4+ runs.

Outright Season Bets

World Series Winner. Pick the team that wins it all. You can bet before the season starts, halfway through, or during the playoffs. The odds change as teams win or lose.

League Winner. Bet on the winner of the American League or the National League. Those two winners meet in the World Series.

Division Winner. Each league has three divisions. Pick the team that finishes top of their division.

Most Valuable Player (MVP). Bet on which player wins the MVP award. Usually a batter with big home run and RBI numbers, or a pitcher with a very low earned run average.

What to Look For Before You Bet

The Starting Pitcher. This is the most important factor in baseball betting. A great pitcher can shut down any offence. A bad pitcher can give up five runs in the first inning. Always check who is starting before you bet. If a team’s ace is pitching, they are a much stronger favourite.

Bullpen Quality. Starting pitchers don’t finish games anymore. They go five or six innings, then relievers take over. A team with a strong bullpen (good relievers) can protect a lead. A weak bullpen will blow games late. This matters for full-game bets.

Home vs Away. Home teams win about 54% of the time in baseball. Some stadiums are hitter-friendly (Colorado, Cincinnati), others are pitcher-friendly (San Francisco, Seattle). Know the park.

Left vs Right Matchups. Some batters struggle against left-handed pitchers. Some crush right-handed pitchers. If a team has a lineup full of lefties facing a tough lefty starter, they might struggle.

Weather. Wind blowing out of the stadium? Expect more home runs and more runs. Wind blowing in? Expect lower scores. Rain delays can also affect starting pitchers – a long delay might force them out of the game early.

Rest and Travel. Baseball teams play almost every day. A team that flew across the country after a night game might be tired. A team that had a day off is fresher. It matters.

The Big Events

World Series. The final. Best of seven. Every pitch matters. The atmosphere is incredible.

MLB Playoffs. Twelve teams make the postseason. Win or go home in each series. Underdogs can surprise anyone in a short series.

All-Star Game. The best players from the American League vs the National League. Doesn’t mean much for betting, but it’s a fun exhibition.

Opening Day. The first day of the season. Every team starts 0-0. Fans are optimistic. Betting volume is huge.

Live Betting on Baseball

Baseball is excellent for live betting. There are 30 seconds to a minute between pitches. You have time to think. Odds update after every pitch, every hit, every run.

If a team scores three runs in the top of the first inning, their odds to win shorten. But if you watched the inning and think the other team’s offence is still dangerous, you might bet against them at longer odds.

The best live betting strategy? Watch the starting pitcher. If he doesn’t have his best stuff, bet against him before the market fully adjusts.

Tips for Baseball Betting

Follow starting pitcher trends. Some pitchers are great at home but terrible on the road. Some dominate certain teams. Some struggle in day games. The numbers are all out there.

Don’t bet every game. There are 15 games most days. You don’t need to bet on all of them. Pick one or two where you have a strong opinion.

Look for value in underdogs. Baseball is random. The best team in the league loses 40-50 times a year. A 2/1 underdog is often a decent bet, especially if they have a good starting pitcher.

Keep a betting record. Write down your bets and why you made them. You’ll learn from your mistakes.

Watch the games. Stats are important, but actually watching gives you a feel for which teams are playing well. The eye test matters.

Key Stats to Know

ERA (Earned Run Average). How many runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings. Below 3.00 is elite. Above 5.00 is bad.

Batting Average (BA). How often a batter gets a hit. .300 is excellent. .250 is average. .200 is poor.

On-Base Percentage (OBP). How often a batter reaches base – hits, walks, hit by pitch. .400 is elite. .350 is good.

Slugging Percentage (SLG). Measures power – how many bases a batter averages per at-bat. .500 is very good. .600 is superstar level.

Common Questions About Baseball Betting

Do you offer MLB betting at VivatBet?
Yes. Every game of the regular season, plus the playoffs and World Series. We also cover some international baseball like the World Baseball Classic.

Why are there so many games?
Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. 162 games means teams have good weeks and bad weeks. Don’t overreact to one loss or one win.

How do I read baseball odds?
We use fractional odds like 5/4 or 2/1. Same as horse racing or football. No need to learn American odds.

Is baseball betting popular in Ireland?
It’s growing. The London Series (MLB games in London) has helped. And more Irish people are following American sports in general. Give it a go – you might enjoy it.

Baseball is a brilliant sport for punters who like data and patterns. The season is long, so you have time to learn. Pick a team, follow their starting pitchers, and see how you do. You might just get hooked.
